رژیم غذایی در شیرخوارگی دارای اثرات مهمی بر میزان کل کلسترول سرم خون است. در ماههای نخست زندگی غلظت کل کلسترول نوزادان شیر مادر خوار سریعتر از غلظت کل کلسترول نوزادان شیرخشک خوار بالا می رود. اما قبل از یک سالگی این اختلاف به تدریج کاهش می یابد. شیر انسان غنی از کلسترول و اسیدهای چرب اشباع شده است اما از نظر وجود اسیدهای چرب اشباع نشده در مقایسه با شیر خشک فقیر می باشد. بنابراین شیر مادر غلظت کل کلسترول سرم را افزایش داده در حالیکه رژیم های فقیر از کلسترول و غنی از اسیدهای چرب اشباع نشده، غلظت کل کلسترول سرم را پایین نگه می دارند.
